The journey of Morton Sewing

Where did it all begin…

It all began in 1986 when Phil Morton, after working in local sewing factories as a sewing machine mechanic, decided to set up his own business. First working out of a room in Macclesfield and then taking on his own premises on Mill Lane in Macclesfield. At the time sewing was extremely popular in the home and in factories local to the area (well know for the Silk trade). Business grow and remained steady, even with the incline in local factories and at home sewing.

Fast forward to more recent times where people started to look at the environment more and with the introduction of The Sewing Bee on TV, business began to boom again. Over time, Phil has become well known in the local area for his knowledge of sewing machines and Morton Sewing has become the place to go for machines repairs and servicing as well as buying machines and sewing accessories.

All good things come to an end...

In 2022, after a lot of deliberation, Phil decided to retire, or take a step back from the business. It seemed that everything from the business, including the buildings would need to be sold. However, Phil has three children, all who at some point have worked in the shop in some capacity. The oldest, Vicky, had spent a lot of time helping Phil to repair and sell machines and invested time in learning about everything there is to know about sewing machines. This is where the journey of Morton Sewing machines continues.

Meet the new owners

Vicky and Dave. The new owners of Morton Sewing Machines

In 2022, Vicky and her husband, Dave took over the family business, planning to bring it into the modern world and developing it whilst keeping the values of good customer service and the knowledge of sewing machine repairs and sales.

After spending time with Phil to repair and sell machines for a long period of time, it made sense for Vicky to take over and keep the family business going. She runs the business alongside her husband, Dave, After a long time working as an engineer in a local factory, he decided to take the plunge from the 8-5 job and the restraints to join Vicky in the self-employed world. Dave had always been interested in tinkering with motorbikes and other electrical goods so it seems only right that he can now help customers of Morton Sewing with the repairing of their sewing machines.

Phil hasn’t fully retired yet and is still on hand to help out when needed and to welcome new and old customers. He also continues to visit factories to repair the industrial machines which Vicky and Dave have decided not to continue with.
